Emergency Food and Clothing Top List of Ways We Help
South Milwaukee residents can access Human Concerns once per month for emergency food, clothing and other important services. A current list of services:

Emergency Food including perishable and non-perishable with an emphasis on nutritional items. Family size determines the amount of food given.  Infant program recipients are eligible for baby formula every 30 days.

Clothing is available to clients and their family members per month.

Household Items such as small appliances, blankets, lamps and cookware are sometimes available, depending on donations received.

Personal Care Products are available once per month. These include dish, laundry and bar soap, toothbrushes and paste, deodorant and razors. When donated, floss, mouthwash, shampoo and hair conditioner are also provided on a needs basis. Diapers and feminine care products are available every month.

Children’s Toys and Books (from children’s to adult), are available in limited quantities.

Information and referral services: Clients receive help/information on applying for the FoodShare program, Women and Infant Children (WIC) program, and Energy Assistance. If needed, the director can meet one-on-one with clients.

Christmas Gift Program for Children: Without this program many children of clients would not receive a Christmas gift. In October, clients complete a modest wish list for their children. Staff and volunteers coordinate the program with individual donors and area churches. SMHC receives the items and coordinates their distribution to client parents in early/mid-December.

K – 12 School Supplies: During the summer families are given the opportunity to sign up children to receive required school supplies, per their school lists.

Stockbox: Those 60 years and older who meet income guidelines are eligible for this supplemental monthly food supply. Open to qualifying Milwaukee County residents and administered and distributed through SMHC.

Medical Lending Program: Residents may borrow medical equipment at no charge for up to 90 days, longer if approved by director. We have: Raised toilet sets, shower benches, walkers, canes, commodes, wheelchairs and more….
